Sebastião Salgado at Ebisu

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

One of my favorite photographers of all time, Sebastião Salgado had an exhibition this weekend at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography located in beautiful Ebisu. His exhibition consisted of over 100 works covering Africa including ones from his latest 10-year GENESIS project. His pieces all in black and white were powerful and looking at them one can’t help but feel they’re living in the moment it was taken. Salgado puts himself in unimaginable places and opens your eyes to parts of Africa never seen. Provocative and painful, this was certainly one exhibit that leaves you forever changed.  Click the gallery above to see pictures of Ebisu at night and the links below to learn more about Sebastião Salgado and his work.

Kazuki Tomokawa Pt 3
vimeo - Kazuki Tomokawa Pt 3

La Blogotheque has an incredible talent for capturing music. The crew started back in 2006 and under the guidance of Chryde and Vincent Moon they release some of the most inspiring videos to capture predominantly indie music. Their take away shows (Les Concerts a Emporter) place these artists in ordinary scenes such as bars, parks and even elevators, allowing anything to happen. Every week the team invites a new artist or band to Paris for this impromptu performance. This time La Blogotheque went to Japan where they captured Kazuki Tomokawa who’s unique singing along with Moon’s videography make these videos impossible to take your eyes away from. It’s dark, mysterious and frighteningly beautiful. Be sure to check out part one and two of the show as well, filmed at an ancient prostitution house in Osaka. The Danger of a Single Story
YouTube - The Danger of a Single Story

“Aren’t you afraid of getting robbed or shot?” That was usually the first line out of their mouths after sharing my plans of backpacking Brazil. So many places and people have a single story, more often than not negatively constructed by popular media. As for Brazil I was never robbed or shot. Would I be lying if I told you Brazil is not dangerous? Yes but I would also be lying if I didn’t tell you the whole truth. That Brazil is one of the most amazing places I’ve been. The country has a remarkable ability to thrive and adopt. Its a country that will be an economic leader soon and has all the resources to do so. I found in many aspects of Brazil to be better than America. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a beautifully talented and moving novelist who’s work depicts the real life of Nigerians from many aspects. I met Sam last night in the crapalicious hostel O Sorriso Do Lagarto in BH. Sam is the first I’ve met in Brazil who is actually traveling alone. We got along very easily and decided to explore the wonders of Ouro Preto together. What ensued was a full day of laughs, breathtaking views and the beginning of a great friendship. Click the first video for more about Sam, his experience in Brazil and what were up to today. Check out the second for his special Brazil bathroom etiquette story.
